Launch of the Capacity Building Workshop 1 (CBW1) of the ERASMUS+ OPEN-ASIA Project in Tampere University (TAU), Finland 

The inaugural Capacity Building Workshop 1 (CBW1) of the ERASMUS+ OPEN-ASIA Project was held from April 15th to 19th, 2024, at Tampere University (TAU), Finland. The event brought together over 50 participants, including representatives from partner institutions, faculty, and early-career professionals in higher education. 

The workshop aimed to foster institutional engagement in Open Science (OS) practices among Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in India and Malaysia, in collaboration with leading universities from Europe and Asia.

The workshop began with a welcome address by Jussi Kivistö, Professor at Tampere University. He emphasized the importance of Open Science in fostering collaboration and innovation. Following this, Kateryna Suprun from Tampere University delivered an overview of the workshop’s agenda and objectives. The inauguration included remarks from Erika Lilja of the Research Council of Finland, who discussed Finland’s leadership in Open Science policy development. 

The five-day workshop featured in-depth sessions and discussions on various aspects of Open Science, including European and Finnish Open Science policies and frameworks, FAIR principles for data management and research outputs, and community engagement and collaboration for Open Science adoption. 

Below are some examples of the presentations delivered in the workshop:

  • Introduction to Open Science in Europe: Kateryna Suprun (Tampere University) outlined the role of the European Open Science Cloud and the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda.
  • National Coordination in Finland: Presentations by Ilmari Jauhiainen and Hanna Lahdenperä (Federation of Finnish Learned Societies) highlighted Finland’s comprehensive approach to OS policies and systematic data management.
  • OS policies, practices, trainings and infrastructure in Tampere University, presented by Päivi Kanerva (Tampere University)
  • FAIR Principles and Research Ecosystems: Hanna Koivula (CSC – IT Center for Science) detailed tools and services supporting FAIR-compliant research.
  • Dr. Erika Lilja (Research Council of Finland) discussed the impact of Open Science policies on national and institutional research frameworks.
  • Helena Laaksonen (Tampere University) led discussions on legal aspects of data sharing and archiving. 

The workshop concluded with Indian and Malaysian participants drafting preliminary Open Science Infrastructure Development Plans for their institutions.   

The Capacity Building Workshop 1 served as a cornerstone event in fostering international collaboration and advancing Open Science practices among partner HEIs, laying the groundwork for sustainable and impactful initiatives in India and Malaysia.
