NMIMS: Shri. Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (SVKM’s NMIMS)

NMIMS is a private deemed-to-be University. SVKM is a public charitable trust established in 1931. NMIMS received the university status in 2003, as per the provisions of section 3 of the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) act. NMIMS is multi-faculty, multi campus, multi-disciplinary comprehensive university, awarded the Category- I autonomy status by the Ministry of Education (MoE- erstwhile MHRD, Govt. of India). NMIMS focuses on two important aspects of higher education sector Knowledge creation and teaching and learning excellence. While the Schools of Pharmacy, Business Management, Science, Technology Management & Engineering and Law conduct Ph.D. Programs and are extensively involved in research, other schools also contribute to the knowledge creation agenda. NMIMS has 17 schools delivering programs in different domains. Eight (8 campuses) spread across the country ensure diversity and a sufficient student strength to create impact. NMIMS has 750+ faculty members and about 1000+ staff members.

NMIMS ensures that the curriculum across all programs is relevant with a strong industry connect. Research in each domain ensures that knowledge remains relevant. As a result of this focus students emerging from NMIMS are sought after and are well placed in the industry as well as different government sectors across the world. A significant part of the financial resources is spent on procuring equipment, knowledge resources, modern communication tools and plagiarism tools. While, NMIMS considers this as an investment for generating human resources which are valuable to the society, it also believes that there is a considerable benefit to the institution as well as the nation if one practices open science policies. Government of India, recognising the importance of the open science practices is trying to formulate policies after considerable deliberation. However, considerable efforts need to be undertaken for the research community to benefit from open science philosophy. These efforts need to be in the form of assessing the state of open science awareness, understanding best practices and formulating next practices in open science, dissemination of the present status nationally as well as globally, formulating strategies across institutes as well as making an effort to contribute to the national policies.  SVKM’s NMIMS along with partnering countries proposes to engage in this direction and make a significant contribution in the objectives of project.

MALAYSIA:

UM: University Malaya

UM is the first university to have been established in Malaya. In efforts to strengthen higher education in both countries, there was a need to upgrade the branches to public university status. With the passing of the University Malaya Act in 1961 by the Parliament, UM has since been recognised as a public university in Malaysia. UM was officiated in the Federation of Malaya on the 1st of January 1962. Its initial objective in providing tertiary education to the people of Malaya had successfully produced numerous renowned leaders and intellectuals in various fields.  In order to achieve its vision, UM is supported by two academies, thirteen faculties, three institutes and three academic centres that comprehensively encompass medicine, science, technology, the social sciences, and humanities. UM also has the first and biggest teaching hospital in Malaysia, which is the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). Emphasis on research is strengthened by the presence of centres of excellence at several of its learning centres. The core of UM’s contributions to the academia and society is through teaching, research, publication, innovation, and commercialisation.

As the research leaders in Malaysia, UM has identified the importance of collecting and sharing raw research data so that the research carried out at the University can be more impactful globally. A research data management policy was approved by the management and implemented in 2021 and reliable data sharing that complies with the FAIR principles of Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable was built and launched early January 2023. This platform was established under the Malaysian Open Science Platform national pilot project initiative led by the Malaysian Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Science and Technology. Through this platform, UM aims to empower the sharing of research data between local and international researchers, while encouraging holistic and high-impact collaboration.

UMS: University Malaysia Sabah

UMS is a public university located in Northern Borneo region spanning across 999 acres of land. It is categorised as a comprehensive university and with the theme of “Leading Towards Innovative Societies”, the university strives to achieve academic excellence and international recognition through its attention to learning and teaching, research and publications, social services and balance in knowledge specialization. It has 4 research institutes, 9 research centres, 14 academic-focused faculties, 7 research units with 14 academic-focused faculties.

Research and innovation serve as the main drive for the university to advance the fundamentals, skills, and transfer of knowledge to our societies for societal well-being in general. With more than 18,000 students, UMS has almost 2000 staff with more than 1200 academicians to deliver quality academic and enhance research excellence. To ensure smooth university management, it has 40 service-related centres and divisions with upcoming Hospital UMS to be completed by the year 2024. One of the centres is Centre of Data and Information Management (PPDM) where it houses large data server and responsible to handle data repositories of UMS. Apart from being actively involved in various research projects, PPDM has developed in-house online platform for data repository related to research and innovations with primary intention to capture data for MyRA (Malaysia Research Assessment) purposes.

It is named DWH system that has the ability for entering data and associated evidence needed for data verification while permitting interoperability with other existing systems in UMS, such as data on academic staff through Human Resource Division system, postgraduate students from System Maklumat pelajar, research and innovations data from SMPPI system as well as financial details from SAGA system. This allows comprehensive data extraction for systematic MyRA scorecard information as means to enhance university’s performance and research visibility.
