Open Science Forum 2 (OSF-2)

The Open Science Forum 2 (OSF-2), organized by Universiti Malaya as part of the OPEN-ASIA ERASMUS Project, has brought together experts, researchers, and students to foster collaboration, build consensus, and highlight the potential of Open Science towards achieving transparency, inclusivity, and innovation in research practices. Under the theme, Open Science: Unlocking the Power of Knowledge, Empowering Communities, Open Science Forum 2 featured keynote addresses, panel discussions, and interactive workshops spanning two days. The program focused on various aspects of Open Science such as open scientific knowledge, Open Science infrastructure, societal engagement and open dialogue with diverse knowledge systems. During the interactive sessions, the speakers have shared valuable insights in the importance of data interoperability, domain-specific data sharing, and emerging topics in Open Science such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and legal frameworks in Open Science.

The second day of the Open Science Forum began with a vibrant cultural performance, celebrating the rich traditions of Sarawak, Malaysia. Attendees were treated to the melodic sounds of the Solo Sape Performance, featuring the Sape, a traditional plucked lute cherished by the Orang Ulu communities such as the Kayan, Kenyah, and Kelabit. This captivating instrument, originating from the Long Nawang area on the Sarawak-East Kalimantan border, has long been used to tell stories and preserve cultural heritage.

The performance continued with ‘Arang Kadang’—the Long Dance in Kelabit. This graceful piece portrayed a tale of Fairy Princesses guiding a victorious Warrior through the mystical highland forests of Borneo. The dance was accompanied by a modern fusion Sape tune, “Dreamy Fog,”. This beautiful showcase of music and dance set an inspiring tone for the day’s discussions, highlighting the deep connection between culture and knowledge.
